These are broad 2026 ranges for funded startups in India's metros — adjust for your city, funding stage and the candidate's exact stack.
The bands, roughly
Data / ML engineer (2–4 yrs): ₹12–22 LPA. Strong Python, pipelines, some production model experience.
Senior ML engineer (5–8 yrs): ₹28–50 LPA. Owns models in production, mentors, talks to product.
ML platform / MLOps lead: ₹45–85 LPA plus equity. Rare, and the hardest to close.
Where offers fall apart
- Equity that isn't explained. Candidates discount option grants they don't understand. Walk them through it or it counts for nothing.
- Slow loops. A great ML engineer has three offers in flight. A two-week gap between rounds loses them.
- Title mismatch. Paying senior money for a "mid" title (or vice-versa) reads as a red flag, not a bargain.
